Cool Gigabyte I-RAM Ramdisk fun and fast!

Yup I had been waiting for my local disty contact to lend me his 2x Gigabyte I-RAM ramdisks to play with but seems he's been busy taking up all his holiday leave for the past few months.

So decided to buy my own Gigabyte I-RAM ramdisk from one of my fav retailers www.auspcmarket.com.au and shove some nice DDR1 memory from my private collection

As far as I know, the device only operates at DDR400 - 200mhz memory speed and uses memory's SPD values. So it's best to use good old Winbond BH-5 based memory with 2-2-2-5/6 SPD values like my old Kingston HyperX PC3200 rated memory.

I used:
  • 2x 512MB Kingston HyperX KHX3200/512
  • 2x 256MB Kingston HyperX KHX3200K2/512

For a total of 1.5GB ramdisk, just enough for quad super pi 32M tests with Q6600

Ran one PCmark05 test with Q6600 @3001Mhz and single 512MB Gecube X1900XTX stock hsf @720/855 and managed to break my old 10,558 PCmark05 regular raid 0 hdd score by nearly 2,000pts!

Pcmark05 = 12,453
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?pcm05=541755

HDTach compared with my 3x 320GB Seagate 7200.10 Matrix Raid 0 array's 20GB front partition test.

Crystalmark benchmark

More benchmarks to come

Re: Gigabyte I-RAM Ramdisk fun and fast!

How about PCmark04 & PCmark05 HDD tests comparing them to my 3x320GB Seagate 7200.10 SATAII 16MB Matrix Raid 0 array.

PCmark04

Raid 0 = 7,918
I-Ram = 61,541

PCmark05

Raid 0 = 8,376
I-Ram = 32,026

Got an even higher PCmark05 score with I-RAM ramdisk with just E6600

Re: Gigabyte I-RAM Ramdisk fun and fast!

Lately, been playing around with trying CentOS Linux OS installs on the I-Ram ramdisk so decided need more space than speed and grabbed some OCZ branded 2x1GB kits from my collection

4x1GB = 4GB I-Ram config
  • 2x1GB OCZ PC3200 Performance 3-3-3-8 dual channel kit
  • 2x1GB OCZ PC4000EB Platinum 3-3-2-8 dual channel kit

HDTach and HDTune report around same average speed as the Kingston BH-5 1.5GB configuration

CentOS with 1.5GB configured Kingston BH-5 I-Ram disk

Re: Gigabyte I-RAM Ramdisk fun and fast!

Hehehe another toy, I want one, those numbers are borderline silly,

Raid 0 = 7,918
I-Ram = 61,541

They would be a FAR better product using PCI-E x2 slot

hehe yeah, the thing that impresses the most is that random access time:- 0.1ms... any faster and it would be accessing stuff before you asked it to.
