120GB OCZ Vertex SSD - v1.1 to v1.3 firmware benchmarks and guide
An opportunity came to buy a brand new shrink wrapped 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD off ebay for a nice price of AUD$425 saving me AUD$130! It came with v1.1 firmware, so needs updating to v1.3 firmware. So decided to make a guide out of it benchmarking the 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD first on v1.1 firmware, then benchmarking the drive on v1.3 firmware.

Flashing v1.1 to v1.3 firmware I touch the recommended preparation steps which include:
Step 1. Boot to DOS mode with USB flash drive you prepared earlier and run FWUPDATE command. You'll be prompted to select Yes or No to detect Vertex SSDs on your system.
Step 2. Once your Vertex SSD is detected, you'll be prompted to select the drive number to flash. In this case select number = 1
Step 3. FWUPDATE will flash your Vertex SSD to v1.3 and report the following:

Benchmarks are done as non-OS 120GB Vertex SSD in IDE mode as Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit RTM is installed on 750GB Samsung SATA in IDE mode right now. Will do AHCI mode OS tests later.

Edit: Apparently only Defrag and Drive Indexing were disabled, Superfetch was still enabled for below benchmarks

Buffered Read = 242.9MB/s vs 244.6MB/s
Average Read Access = 0.08ms vs 0.08ms

Seems Block size was different on v1.1 = 128KB on v1.3 = 64KB ?
Min = 187.3MB/S vs 185.9MB/s
Max = 219.3MB/s vs 188.6MB/s
Avg = 216.3MB/s vs 182.5MB/s
Random Write v1.1 vs v1.3
Block size same for both 64KB
Min = 122.4MB/s vs 112.7MB/s
Max = 258.7MB/s vs 266.0MB/s
Avg = 213.2MB/s vs 211.7MB/s
Buffered Write v1.1 vs v1.3
AS SSD Benchmark 1.2.3556.18595
Probably lower than expected 4K results due to IDE mode instead of AHCI ?

Seq Write = 131.86 vs 136.18
4K Read = 28.68 vs 28.84
4K Write = 8.72 vs 8.62
4K-64K Thrd Read = 30.43 vs 30.66
4K-64K Thrd Write = 8.35 vs 8.18
Access Time Read = 0.135ms vs 0.134ms
Access Time Write = 0.497ms vs 0.505ms
Read Score = 81 vs 82
Write Score = 30 vs 30
Overall Score = 162 vs 163
Seems v1.3 firmware had improvements especially in Game copy test.

ISO = 75.23MB/s vs 79.67MB/s
Program = 61.94MB/s vs 63.47MB/s
Game = 78.47MB/s vs 90.09MB/s

Initially forgot to disable Superfetch for v1.1 vs v1.3 firmware benchmarks, but now with Superfetch disabled on v1.3 firmware look at the difference
v1.1 - Defrag and Drive Index disabled, Superfetch enabled (left)
v1.3 - Defrag and Drive Index disabled, Superfetch enabled (middle)
v1.3 - Defrag and Drive Index disabled, Superfetch disabled (right)
