Rampage 3rd Year Update

Have not posted in years or upgraded since the REX build but after 3 years and a great 24/7 OC it still plays the latest games. Hardware changes since original build: Memory/GPU/OS and Case. Still a constant reader of the site and one of the long time members. Old guy now and thanks George for all the advice and great site and again the Gigabyte 45T Extreme I won here is still in play as well.

Notes of Temps: the original in an air cond. room in summer. today is in a heated room winter.

Then

Now

Great to see old hardware still running fine. My work pc is still Xeon W3540 with DFI X58-T3EH8 with 12GB memory running very strong as well.

Doing more server virtualisation work these days so may look at LGA2011 rig for 8x8GB = 64GB memory

Just curious... Why did you decided to build it with DDR3 version of the board?

At that time most people reccomended me to use DDR2 version for easier overclocking. After 2 years i have to agree with that but i have some technical reasons why i prefer DDR3 boards.

I was lucky and recently bought one of these boards.

FSB 399Mhz
Mem 1596Mhz 8-8-8-24 CR1 (Adata XPG 2, 1866+) 4x 2gb
CPU 3391Mhz ( Xeon x3360)
FSB Strap: 200
Performance level 8

vCore 1,3v
vNB 1,33v
VTT 1,20
PLL, 1,5v
vMem 1,71v

NB/board Cooling is stock, CPU has Arctic coolling Freezer 7. NB is reaching 65C.

Stability is good, but if I set 400Mhz (which is my target for 24/7 running) the system shall not post.

Basicaly I copied voltages from my DFI board and later i lowered them (especially the VTT and vNB) while stability at 399 was still great. At 400Mhz no luck...

Any idea why? I have been messing with settings few days, but this seems like a solid barrier... With 2 dimms only the system posts and runs fine.

Have you tried 401MHz FSB instead of 400MHz? Tried the 1:2 divider on different straps?

I tried different straps, however I cannot directly change the memory multiplier - only strap and target memory speed. I also tried 403mhz - same result.

At all computer works fine if I use only 2 memory sticks. Then its fine, but I noticed a lot of changes in bios (if set to auto) once I cross the 400Mhz barrier.

Bios is marked as 0601, but i dont want to update it yet. this board was used to set record of 660Mhz FSB 3 years ago on some Asus OC gig... I bought it with guarantee of exchange for another board of this type if it will not work as expected since it was used with liquid nitrogen.

Checked also performance level and set it manually to 8...

Memory is Elpida Hyper MNH on 1,65v which i managed to run on 4x2gb 1600Mhz at 8-8-8-24 CR1 Perf level 8 previously on my DFI board.

Therefore I believe its just a matter of bios settings.

I also re-read this article:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/2427/8

tRD = 8, tCL = 8, x should be 2 at 400Mhz, while at 399 its 1,25 , divider should be 2:1...

since it works in 399 and not 400 Mhz the problem could be here somewhere, but this calculation clearly works for 2x dimm config.

You can flash just one of the BIOSs, choose the one you want to boot from and flash it, the other one will remain untouched.

Your issue is kinda weird, unfortunately I've never tested 4 sticks of Hyper on my REX, only 2 sticks, and all my tests were made on dual core CPUs.

Maybe that's supposed to be the case, but I got a better oc out of an X48 Rampage Extreme with an E8500 and a half horsepower Kayl SS Phase unit (5.28GHz) than I could get with any of my EP45-UD3P boards. (Used CellShock with the X48 and Transcend aXeRAM PC2-9600 with the UD3P boards)
