Hello fellows.

I am building a rig for a friend and have some doubts on the DDR3 field. The two kits I am weighing up are:

G.Skill Trident 2000 9-9-9-24-2N F3-16000CL9T-6GBTD (Elpida BBSE)
G.Skill Perfect Storm 2000 9-9-9-24-2N F3-16000CL9T-6GBPS (Elpida MNH-E Hyper)

While the 50nm hypers seem to be more capable (especially at tighter timings), I have my doubts about their reliability. I am planning to do a 1:1 200 bclock, 4000 core, 2000 8-8-8-XX-1N for 24/7 use. No benchmarking will be done.

The difference in price is 10€ (being the Trident kit the cheaper one), so no problem about that. Plus, I'd have some problems installing the fan kit on the Perfect Storm due to lack of clearance with the Megahalems. Is it essential to run them 24/7 (the case is a TJ10 and is very well ventilated)? Will I be able to reach 2000 CL7 with any of them? (max Vdimm=1.70v, Vqpi=1.45v).

EDIT: I have seen some Trident kits doing +2000MHz 7-9-7-21-1N at 1.64v, that would be what I'm looking for.

Hypers will do DDR3-2000 MHz 7-8-7-20 no problem, and the BBSE should do DDR3-2000 MHz 7-9-7-20, or 8-8-8-24 depending how it behaves. I'd say you'll most likely be limted by the CPU's IMC, you'll probably need some pretty serious Vtt to run those mem clocks totally stable 24/7.

Have you compared running DDR3-1600 6-7-6-18 or DDR3-6-6-6-18 vs DDR3-2000 7-9-7-20 or 8-8-8-24 before? The lower speed tighter timings of the former is very close to the performance of the latter and a lot easier to run.

What about the fan kit issue, is it really needed? Do G.Skill include it with the 2000 PS series (and not with the 2000 RJ and 2000 TD ones) because they are rated at 1.65v (the rest is rated at 1.6v iirc), or just to justify its top series (some kind of "extra")?

Is 1.65v-1.70v 2000MHz really in need of active cooling for 24/7 usage? I guess I'll see no degradation at those voltages, but just trying to be sure.

Well Andre on XS forums said Gskill switched all the kits to elpida bbse now so perfect storm given the minor price difference is probably elpida bbse based these days unlike early kits. But since you clearance issues then Trident is the one you want.

As to rated voltage, Gskill's latest ics are capable of 1.6v instead of 1.65v to reach same rated speed/timings nothing to do with what type of fan is used to cool them.

Yeah I agree the Tridents (G.Skill Trident 2000 9-9-9-24-2N F3-16000CL9T-6GBTD)are a great kit, Eva and I both own them and they're brilliant bang for buck.

They will easily do DDR3-1600 6-7-6-18 1T, and are flexible for benching, which should suit your mates needs.
