Exclamation Windows 7 + Turbo mode fixed 12x multi issue [DFI UT X58] - research
Old 31-05-2009, 12:45 AM   #1 (permalink)

On DFI UT X58-T3EH8, to enable Turbo mode 21x multi on i7 920 you need PPM, EIST and Turbo mode enabled. Additionally, in Vista to fully enable i7 920 Turbo mode 21x multiplier, you need to set Power Management profile to High Performance. In Win7, the same applies as seen in below screenshot. WinXP doesn't need such requirements AFAIK. However, some folks have reported with Win7 OS, Turbo mode results in fixed 12x multiplier under load and idle. You can see the reports here.

I've tested on DFI UT X58-T3EH8 4/28 beta bios 4x i7 920 C0/D0 no problems with Turbo mode 21x multi always enabled in Win7 OS. So couldn't help with the issue as I never came across it. But I just swapped in my Xeon W3520 cpu, and it's first time experiencing the fixed 12x multi issue in Turbo mode for Win7 as outlined here. So could be cpu/bios specific issue ????

Testing a few settings to see if i can get 21x multi - instead of changing vcore with VID, set VID = AUTO and use VID Special Add to adjust vcore voltage

Was okay with lower vcore vid special percentage at 101.8%. At 110.1% is when multiplier goes weird with 20x idle -> 12x load -> 15-17x idle.

With CxE set to AUTO instead of Disabled, 21x multi under load achieved BUT idle cpuz reported multi is funny one 22x! Under load multi changes from 22x idle to 21x load and voltage changes from 1.120v idle to 1.312v load

As per i7 Turbo Tool and RealTemp author's explanation, the calculated multiplier is more accurately depicting Turbo status ONLY under load and can vary at idle. It seems with CxE enabled, Turbo mode 21x multi is fully engaged only under load. At idle no idea what CPUZ is thinking LOL

Another test at 21x200 Turbo mode with CxE AUTO set

FIXED idle and load 21x multi!

No probs pushing higher for me on 21x with W3520 now, i7 Turbo says max Calculated and MSR multi is 21x under load and 3dmark06 cpu score confirms it is working at 21x210Bclk with VID = AUTO + VID Special Add = 110.1% for 1.088v idle and 1.312v load vcore when CxE set to C1E.

CPUZ Idle vs After Load Idle

max Calculated and MSR multi is 21x

3dmark06

max Calculated and MSR multi is 21x

Wprime v1.55 1024M Load and Post Load Idle

Running at near the max of CPU VID Special Add Limit = Enabled max selectable CPU VID Special Add: 114.17% with CPU VID Control = AUTO which gives me 1.136V idle vcore and max vcore under load of 1.376v. More >114.88% you need to disable CPU VID Special Add Limit but that cancels out the work around fix for Turbo multi and ends up with cpu multi at between 12x to 18x instead of at 21x under load.

Ahh the 12 mult has finally plagued the great eva2000. Welcome to the club. LOL, JK.

Man I can't call it myself. I can leave my VID at auto and adjust my VID special add to 103.30% with Turbo and BCLK at 200 which brings me to 1.2v VID, 21 mult and 4200MHz no problem. Then I reset my computer and adjust the special add back to auto and bump VID up to 1.2 and still get 21 mult at 4200MHz. But then if I reboot again and not change anything in the BIOS I get the 12 mult. At least I have done this a couple of times with the same results. The 12 mult only happens when I up the VID but I can trick it to stay at 21 mult if I use the special add 1st. At VID auto I have a 21 mult. But then there are times when I can jack with the power options and try various settings as well as click the "restore default settings for this plan" on them and trick it to 21 mult but upon a restart be back at 12 mult. Then there are times when I start my computer and it is at various mult. Sometimes 12, sometimes 14, sometimes 15, and so on. But this appears to be only DFI related so I don't see how it could be CPU specific. Then again it wouldn't suprise me.

Tried my trick with CxE auto instead of disabled ? Remember, i had 4x i7 920 c0/d0 no probs with 21x Turbo multi. Only W3520 has this issue for me.

EDIT: Actually try CxE = C1E instead - seems to have worked for me

I think I tried that but I will again. All I know is this is wild! Let me ask you this though. Have you tried taking your 3520 out and putting one or all your 920's back in? Chances are they will be 12 mult now too. I am interested in seeing the results.

Will do later on.. can't be bothered yet CxE = C1E seems to have fixed 21x multi at idle and load though.
