| Non-ECC Ram in a ECC Ram Motherboard
Guys, This might sound like a dumb question but Google has let me down. If I have a server type motherboard that is listed as specifying DDR2-667 ECC RAM would standard Non-ECC RAM work? A search has found that the reverse is true, but not this way. Sorry if it's a dumb question, just not that clever with this. I have located information where a BIOS may enable you to turn ECC off then it should but it's not a generalization. Cheers Willo |

i highly doubt it. ECC ram is fully buffered/error correcting ram - therefore using non-error correcting ram/unbuffered i doubt it will work. As a side point - ECC ram is generally more expensive also...i think if you could turn it off (ECC) then it would be a special motherboard / would be different for every board - but as i said - generally they are not designed the same |

| By scottath Ta Mate,
As far as I can tell though there is fully buffered ECC RAM and then there is ECC RAM that is not fully buffered????? |

He Eva, I have googled it to death and couldn't find any info. I asked Supermicro direct and got this:- 1. When you say an Opteron 8000 series processor will fit into a motherboard designed for an Opteron 2000 series processor, will the system operate in that configuration? Yes, 8000 series processor can be supported on DP 2000 series of MB without any operation problem. 2. Of the motherboards that have the memory requirement listed as DDR2-667-800MHZ ECC RAM, will those motherboards also operate with non-ECC DDR2 memory?? Yes, Opteron processor supports REGISTERED DDR2 ECC and non-ECC memory. Cheers Willo |
