Corsair Dominator GT Elpida Hyper Announcement

We have seen a number of reports across various forums about failures of modules (from Corsair as well as from other memory manufacturers) built with Elpida “Hyper” RAMs. Through lab testing, we have now been able to reproduce similar failures. We are continuing to test to determine the cause of these failures. Note that although a relatively small percentage of “Hyper” ICs appear to be affected, the rate of failure is not acceptable to Corsair or to our customers.

Due to these failures, we will no longer sell Hyper-based modules until the issue can be resolved. We have also have asked our retailers to return any modules they currently have on their shelves. Products impacted include TW3X4G1600C6GTF, TR3X6G1866C7GTF, TR3X6G2000C8GTF, TR3X3G2000C7GTF, and TR3X6G2000C7GTF. We are working on enhancing our manufacturing and testing process to be able to offer these parts again as soon as possible.

We continue to stand behind these modules 100% with our standard warranty, which can be found at http://www.corsair.com/warranty/default.aspx.

(George, as usual, please move this thread if you want it in a more appropriate or more visible spot. Hope you are feeling better my friend. )

Wow didnt expect this, but maybe it will spur some action from elpida now. They really need to get their act together.

Does corsair have any other IC's that can compete with low latency/high frequency? HCF0 was good for cas8 but anything for cas7?

woah huge news indeed - posted on front page http://i4memory.com/wp/article/703

I hope Elpida get to the bottom of this - luckily my GT modules are older Elpida hyper IC batches and handle well still.

thanks for heads up Mike

Elpida

Elpida is Japan's last hope in PC memory chips in an industry dominated by Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor Inc.
Elpida lost the No 3. slot to U.S. chipmaker Micron Technologies in January-March.
Years of price slides and weak consumer demand have hammered the sector, dragging DRAM makers into the red and forcing Germany's Qimonda to file for insolvency this year. Elpida reported a record operating loss of 147 billion yen in the year ended March 31.
"This ensures that Elpida will survive, but can it win?" said Yoshihiro Shimada, chief analyst at research firm SPI Analysis. "That depends on how quickly it can catch up to its competition in shrinking its chips."
Elpida, which posted its sixth straight quarterly loss in January-March, has fallen behind Samsung in using smaller circuitry on its DRAM chips, which are mainly used to power PCs.
Smaller circuitry on semiconductors allows makers to pack more power onto smaller chips and lower per-chip costs, but it also yields more chips per wafer and exacerbates oversupply.
Elpida said it would use the funds to shrink chips and expand output of advanced DRAM chips at its Hiroshima plant in southwest Japan to cut costs by 20 percent.
If Elpida upgrades its production technology, "that would be bad news for Korean makers which have benefitted from price competitiveness with cutting-edge production lines," said Song Myung-sup, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities in Seoul.
Elpida will cement ties with Taiwanese makers, Elpida Chief Executive Yukio Sakamoto said, adding that TMC is considering taking a 10 percent stake in Elpida, while Elpida is also considering a stake in TMC.
"The last battle in the DRAM sector is starting," forcing further consolidaton, he said at a news conference.
Cost cutting to lower manufacturing costs is most likely the problem with their product. Prevalent accross the board here due to the economy.
