Talking 600W OCZ EvoStream Modular power supply - Part 2

After doing the initial preview tests with 128MB Gainward FX5200 PCI video card here, it's time to swap out the 128GB Gainward FX5200 PCI video card for 2x 256MB BFG 7800GTX SLI video cards with modded bios at 473(525)/1350 clock speed and redo some tests

System:
System Power Consumption

I measured the system total power consumption using a Power-Mate power meter http://www.power-mate.com.au/. Ran 3dmark06 and PCmark05 and recorded the peak power draw values listed below.

@2400Mhz at 1.275v bios (1.259v)
Windows Idle watts = 187.7W
Windows Orthos Load watts = 231.9W
Windows TAT Load watts = 240.8W

PCmark05 = 359.8W peak

3dmark06 = 344.1W peak
Return to Proxycon = 337.9W
Firefly Forest = 344.1W
CPU1 - Red Valley = 253.5W
CPU2 - Red Valley = 266.3W
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) = 334.1W
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) = 335.7W

@3600Mhz at 1.425v bios (1.394v)
Windows Idle watts = 218.9W
Windows Orthos Load watts = 303.7W
Windows TAT Load watts = 324.4W

PCmark05 = 401.3W peak

3dmark06 = 394.8W peak
Return to Proxycon = 386.5W
Firefly Forest = 394.8W
CPU1 - Red Valley = 290.6W
CPU2 - Red Valley = 289.6W
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) = 384.9W
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) = 384.9W

For the stressprime 'Orthos' and TAT load tests there wouldn't be as much a power draw difference between 7800GTX SLI vs FX5200 PCI since there isn't any video card load in those tests. You can see the difference in power draw when video card load comes into play with 7800GTX SLI configuration.

Now to compare all the data including FX5200 PCI test in a nice graph

600W OCZ EvoStream Modular rail measurements

Measured the power supplies rails using Digitech QM1538 digital multimeter which has data logging function via serial port or serial to USB adaptor. I used datalogging software to record an approximate 360 second interval for idle and load tests to get a min, max and average rail measurement.

Re: 600W OCZ EvoStream Modular power supply - Part 2

Damn you're a busy man eva

65w extra drain with SLI'd 7800GTXs .

I suppose that's going to be considered moderate when the 8800s are out eh?

Yes or no. Do they drain a little more, alot more, or a heck of alot more??

Re: 600W OCZ EvoStream Modular power supply - Part 2

don't have 8800GTX/i680 yet heh...

I get promised alot of hardware by disties/manufacturers/retailers but probably 2/10 times it eventuates heh. Most consistent has to be OCZ though.. they follow through most of the time - nice being a OCZ beta tester for the past 5 yrs

Did a quick browse and seems alot of EvoStream reviews are out now

Re: 600W OCZ EvoStream Modular power supply - Part 2

More tests

Time for some Power-mate power draw measurements with 8800GTS SLI installed. As you can see for single PCI-E spaced DFI NF4 Ultra-D, having 2x 8800GTS SLI just fits

FX-60 stock with 8800GTS SLI stock windows start up system power draw = 277.3 Watts.

System:
  • FX-60 CCB2E 0536RPMW
  • Scythe Infinity + Thermaltake 120x25mm 81cfm fan
  • DFI NF4 Ultra-D R.AD0 0406 Bios (SLI modded)
  • 2x 640MB Gainward Bliss 8800GTS Dual DVI with Thermaltake 120x25mm 81cfm 0.33A fan on top
  • 2GB OCZ PC4000EB 3-3-2-8 with 120x25mm Delta 75cfm 0.4A fan
  • 160GB Seagate 7200.7 SATAII NCQ
  • Gigabyte I-RAM with 1.5GB Kingston KHX3200 Winbond BH-5
  • Pioneer DVD-RW
  • 600W OCZ EvoStream Modular

Power-Mate Peak power draw measurements

-----------------------------------------------------------------
@2612Mhz - 13x200HTT at 1.35v bios (1.312v)

8800GTS SLI @513/1584 stock
PC/Windows start up = 277.3W (1.286A)
Stressprime Orthos Small FFTs = 297.4W (1.314A)
3Dmark06 = 370.9W (1.629A)
PCMark05 = 322.4W (1.426A)

8800GTS SLI @650/2010
Stressprime Orthos Small FFTs = 307.1W (1.388A)
3Dmark06 = 408.9W* (1.842A) (DMM measured +12v rail min/max/average = 12.22v/12.23v/12.228v)
PCMark05 = 354.1W (1.555A)

* Seems 3Dmark06's HDR/SM3.0 HDR1 test - Canyon test draws the most system power draw in 8800GTS SLI config. While rest of time 3Dmark06 fluctuated between 340-390W system power draw.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
@3006Mhz - 9x334HTT at 1.45v bios (1.408v)

8800GTS SLI @513/1584 stock
PC/Windows start up = 308.2W (1.318A)
Windows Idle = 235.2W
Stressprime Orthos Small FFTs = 337.5W (1.514A) (DMM measured +12v rail min/max/average = 12.23v/12.23v/12.23v)
3Dmark06 = 395.7W (1.757A)
PCMark05 = 345.1W (1.529A)

8800GTS SLI @650/2010
Stressprime Orthos Small FFTs = 297.4W (1.314A)
3Dmark06 = 433.4W (1.934A)
PCMark05 = 375.8W (1.697A)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like 600W OCZ EvoStream should be able to handle 8800GTS SLI without problems

Re: 600W OCZ EvoStream Modular power supply - Part 2

Excellent! Looks like this is the PSU for me. I was waiting for the power draw results on this lil beauty and if it can handle 2x 8800GTS in SLi, it will be plenty for my power requirements.

- Powerful
- Modular
- OCZ quality

Time to go shopping.
