It is and yes it should. Kentsfield is basically 2 Conroe's on one chip.

So Kentsfield should work on newer 975 and all 965 boards.

I dont think I would risk putting a Kentsfield into a DS3 with only 3 phase and try to OC, but I could be totally wrong

someone i know has a DFI for me in a little bit

Settled on Conroe then,i cant see any upgrade path at all for 939/am2.

To get back into the game?

So far I've seen ~80%+ say they are going to be buying a cheap AMD vs the ~20% say they are going to build a whole new system for conroe.

AMD never left the game, these price drops are huge, and will only increase the amount of sales for AMD.

It wasn't meant in that context

I was meaning as in they will have to get something special out and soon if they want to compete with Conroe

I'm not really partial to either AMD or Intel (Own both) , or though i must say AMD was a huge performance boost in gaming over my old intel that i upgraded from, but i'll always try and stay with current technology regardless of who it's made by, wallet and wife permitting of course!

But yes the drop in prices are a win win situation for us all.

AMD has confirmed that AM3 processors will work in AM2 motherboards.

so if you buy am2 motherboard now, AM3 quad-core will work on it.

should maybe turn this into the official quad-core thread :/

Interesting read, i do like the idea of not having to upgrade mobo's to use the next generation cpu's

Good in theory, I doubt I'd want to use a old mobo with a new CPU though. Besides, nothing will realy stop them doing a 180 and decide it's not worth while integrating support for DDR2 on a new gen CPU. The days of upgrading with longativity are long gone. If you truly wanted longetivity, one of those asrock mobos with would probably be the best buy.
