AMD Austin Tech Day - Information from the inside

This is a discussion on AMD Austin Tech Day - Information from the inside within the General AMD Motherboards / CPU forums, part of the AMD motherboards / CPU category; Wow didn't realise there would still be much of a following on AMD side - but based on traffic numbers ...

ok it seems that info posted in public so far is that these demo chips were really really nice cherries according to saaya which probably speaks from personal testing experience at Foxconn

saaya says average OCs on air are around 3.6GHz/1.4v and more vcore doesnt do much

massman claims that CPC is same as i7 but he's been told that i assume and i would take that info with a massive grain of salt
Still, AMD has a few more months to improve things even more

that's true george

francois is also going to do some serious changes i reckon at Intel camp

i reckon they will introduce high leakage chips now to reach better frequencies

Yeah, more important is whether its performance is worth the effort
Agreed.

Although I didn't get to see any high frequency benchmark runs (they demo'ed stability with Crysis time-demo loops), from the quick runs I got off on air, if the chips can keep scaling further then they have the potential to do some damage to the charts. Also with the increase to 8MB total cache (6MB L3) we could see them on par in terms of 3D performance but this is purely speculation as it was difficult to get any kind of numbers off to even get some sort of performance gradient comparison - really am going to have to wait for the NDA.

did you actually see -196C on the thermometer
you know that is physically impossible right unless they mean phenom2 no cold bug when system shut off
Hahahaha, yeah mate, I know it's impossible to get -196'C on the probe. The probe read -188'C at it's coldest and it was taped to the base of a Dragon Evo 2.2 pot. The fact I know it was as close as it could physically be to -196'C is because the pot was constantly full of LN2 hahaha

Oh, and it cold booted and rebooted with no problems at these temps

I think for many, AMD is still the little company that could compared to the blue giant that is Intel. Compare this with everyone's urge to have a competitive alternative within the market and you start to see why people keep an eye out - even just for the hell of it

Let's hope so because I want to see some tighter efficiency so they can really go head to head with Intel.

Wouldn't mind seeing that but I wouldn't want to see it if it leads to some woeful TDPs on air/water setups.

I'm still waiting for Francois/Intel to get back to me on a certain question about cold bug that I had asked in an online press-chat on Tuesday but was never answered and instead taken offline - still waiting to hear from Intel PR

Hi there,

I need a little information. Some websites relayed 6Ghz on LN2 for 1.9v. I think it's exagerated because 6Ghz + (-196°) is hard to believe...

So what's really happening ? It reaches mid5Ghz under LN2 whith pretest pieces, like i7 isn't it ?
Anyway that's pleasant for AMD, competition's back !

Yup - stayed in the chan for 10 mins without answering the question then bailed and then 5 mins later HK PR said 'yeah, we'll get back to you on that one' and I'm yet to hear a peep. It was really quite disappointing at first but actually quite amusing in hindsight after what has come out of the AMD Austin Tech Day.

Benji I've got the full details such as voltages per CPU frequency etc but as I mentioned in the OP, I'm gagged by the NDA.

While others have loose lips with NDA info, I prefer to respect the NDA (and through doing so, everyone involved with it), but rest assured as soon as I have the green light to release info, I'll definitely be doing so.

One thing that I can say is that the new Phenom II, Dragon platform, scales like AMD has never scaled before and does so under a full bubbling pot of LN2 - no temp-touch pouring

I'm relieved to see AMD overcome the cold bug and I hope that this change will also encourage Intel to reach the same achievement.

You have tell me enough. I guess the choice between AM3 and 1366 will be harder than we was thinking two months ago. AMD is back ? :wooot:

Interesting information and thread all round. I personally hope AMD can pull the performance off, competition is what is needed to push further and faster than ever
