My original plan with this PC was to go the 2160 as a 2-3 month stop gap until the new quads came out.

Seeing these prices I'm thinking the 2160 may be hanging around for a while yet

Smaller die = more amount of chips out of a single silicon wafer in the fab process as opposed to a larger die (eg 65nm/90nm.

Once the 45nm CPU's have settled and old stocks are cleared (eg E6*00 & E6*50 series) prices should reduce further. I guess Intel don't want to be put in the position they were when the C2D was launched, with excess Netburst stocks still in retail & distribution lines.

No competition is a poor arguement by Intel if they use that as an excuse to justify their Yorkfield prices, as they should be taking greater advantage of increasing marketshare in the industry whilst they can, in retaliation to the significant loss they had in '06 in both the mainstream and server markets.

Intel, it seems, are not only out to try and make a profit, but are actively profiteering
