Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 B2 + P5B Deluxe

Up until now, I've only played with B1 Step 5 ES sample core 2 duo cpus. So I decided it's time I purchased my first brand new retail B2 stepping cpu - a Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800

Interesting my X6800 temps are pretty uniform across coretemp, AI Suite, Asus PC Probe2, Everest Ultimate v3.50, TAT and Rivatuner 2.0 Final + Core2 temp plugin.

The corners do seem to be lower than the middle of the IHS.. which is better than the other way round

Temps are really nice prime95 small ffts load at 9x400FSB at 1.39v is only 47-52C coretemp load.. that's like 14-20C cooler delta temps than my E6600/E6700 B1 at same clock and vcore! Guess there's a reason X6800 costs 3x times more than E6600

Interesting, this has to be the first Core2 cpu I have had that jumped so much in temps under Prime/Stressprime small ffts load before. Usually, when i prime load test, my Core2 cpus final max cpu coretemp load temp is only ~2C higher than when you just start prime tests and that takes 2-4+ hrs to get there. For example, if you start priming core2 will say hit 60C, after 2-24hrs later it usually hovers around ~62C.

Well this X6800 is different, at 9x400FSB at 1.4v prime started at coretemp load temps of 47-49C, but after a few minutes jumped to 52C.

Seems it could be heat or more likely lack of vcore to get any higher since P5B DX max vcore is 1.7v which is 1.62v idle and 1.59v load. Best can do 1M stable is 4040-4050mhz at 1.62v idle. 4050mhz completed 1M but rebooted when loading Asus PC Probe2, so 4040mhz seems to be it for 9x multiplier at least.

Super Pi 1M

Managed a brief prime95 load test at 3807mhz at 1.52v load vcore before it rebooted.

Room temp rose a tad from 26C to 28.4C.

So basically from the brief testing I've done it is same as both my E6600 B1 Step 5 ES cpus in terms of max oc. Probably my E6600 B1s slightly better with 4005mhz at 1.62v 32M stable on P5B Deluxe and 4023-4043mhz at 1.66v on Asus P5B DH Deluxe versus X6800 1M stable at 4040mhz at 1.62v. But X6800 B2 L627A872 runs alot cooler at same vcore.

Definite proof that 4:5 on P5B Deluxe runs at much tighter chipset latencies compared with 2:3 divider.

Higher FSB and 2mhz raw cpu clock higher might have helped but 45mhz difference in memory clocks.

Did a remount of Swiftech G4 Storm and managed to pull off single 32M @4Ghz but maxed out vcore on P5B Deluxe (1.62v idle and 1.59-1.60v load).

Pushing up to 4025Mhz

So Swiftech G4 Storm remount allowed me to gain 119mhz oc for 32M from 3950mhz max 32M to 4069mhz max 32M

Slowly finding the balls to be a bit more adventurous and decided to do the Asus P5B Deluxe vdroop pencil mod

I used a 2B pencil and about 4 strokes across resistor pictured with yellow line through it below:

- resistance was DMM measured at 80 ohm
- 1.325v bios set vcore = 1.280-1.288v bios monitored, 1.29v idle/1.27v load Asus PC Probe2 reported.

- resistance was DMM measured at 37.4 ohm
- 1.325v bios set vcore = 1.296v steady bios monitored, 1.30v idle/1.30v load Asus PC Probe2 reported.

I'm happy with that for now a reduction in vdroop by ~0.03v Asus PC Probe2 reported under load. Not going to be too greedy

Going very nicely so far 3hrs 20+ minutes prime95 small ffts @3807Mhz at 1.552v! Was around 57-59C load temp at under 3hr mark, past 3hr mark seems to have jumped to 60-65C - very different from my E6600 B1 where even after 4-8+ hrs temps only rise 2-3C.

Decided to stop it at the 4hr mark

At higher vcore above 1.6125v the initial pencil modded of drooping resistor from 80ohm to 37ohm resistance wasn't enough to prevent further vdroop. So whipped out the 2B pencil and dropped resistance down to 14.5 ohm. And now it's all good at least from bios perspective

Final outcome

Improvements after vdroop pencil mod are amazing! Before the mod, 10x 400FSB = 4000Mhz would need 1.7v max vcore set in bios for 1.62v idle and 1.59v load. I could pass single Super Pi 32M but Systool dual 32M Pi would reboot at 50-80% mark - Systool dual 32M Pi is a good indicator of whether a setting is capable of dual Super Pi 32M.. Now with vdroop pencil mod, with vcore set to 1.65v in bios I get 1.616-1.624v idle and 1.624v load and now capable of Systool dual 32M Pi

Dual 32M @ 4000Mhz - 10x400FSB at 1.625v bios (1.592v)

Prior to doing the Vdroop pencil mod, my X6800 L627A872 cpu could pass single Super Pi 32M at 1.7v maxed vcore in bios (1.62v idle/1.59v load) but dual Super Pi 32M would reboot. Now with Vdroop pencil mod I can do Super Pi dual 32M at just 1.625v bios set (1.592v - 1.600v idle/load)!

Decided to do the full photo shoot of the event with the following applications opened as well:

4x Cpuz windows
1x coretemp
1x Asus PC Probe2
1x Asus AI Suite
1x Memset
1x Windows Task Manager window

You can see up to iteration #10 dual Super Pi 32M times were similar for each instance, but core0 (Super Pi on the right of screen) started to run slower probably due to all the applications opened as well. As you can see vcore reported didn't budge much and for some reason my X6800 L627A872 runs very cool - about 14-22C cooler than my E6600 B1 Step 5 ES cpus

So how has Vdroop pencil mod helped max single Super Pi 32M clocks ?

Before Vdroop pencil mod
- max single Super Pi 32M = 4069Mhz at 1.7v bios set (1.62v/1.59v load)

After Vdroop pencil mod
- max single Super Pi 32M = 4080Mhz at 1.65v bios set (1.62v idle/load)
- max single Super Pi 32M = 4091Mhz at 1.675v bios set (1.65v idle/load)

Note room temps have dropped from 27-31C to 24-28C! So maybe that helped along with more steady vcore under load

More proof that 4:5 divider on P5B Deluxe is alot tighter wound than 2:3. Only ~2 seconds faster with 11x372FSB and 2:3 for 558mhz 4-4-4-4 memory clocks.

Slightly better by ~0.4 seconds by booting at 333FSB instead of 372FSB and clockgen up to 372FSB.
