Cool Asus R.O.G. Blitz Formula SE (DDR2) / Blitz Extreme (DDR3) - 2 phase DDR preview

Asus R.O.G. Blitz Formula (DDR2) / Blitz Extreme (DDR3)
- 2 phase DDR2/DDR3 Preview

Six weeks ago the news was out that Asus were releasing their R.O.G. series of Intel P35 chipset motherboards with special features such as Crosslinx allowing 8x + 8x Crossfire, Voltiminder LED, Fusion Block System, Load line calibration, CPU Level Ups, LCD Poster and more importantly for us memory enthusiasts - 2 phase DDR2/DDR3 circuits (each phase shares half the the load providing more stable power to memory).

2-Phase DDR2/DDR3
Straight from the manual:
With the embeded 2-Phase DDR2, this motherboard allows users to reach higher memory frequencies and enjoy better performance. Compared with only one phase solutions, this motherboard ensures longer power component lifespans and higher overclockability due to cooler temperatures and better efficiency.
Thanks to Asus, I've managed to get my hands on both the Asus Blitz Extreme (DDR3) and Asus Blitz Formula Special Edition (DDR2). The Asus Blitz Formula comes in 2 versions both which are DDR2 only - a regular northbridge heatsink version and a Special Edition which has Fusion Block System northbridge cooling)

Side by side both boards

Asus Blitz Extreme (DDR3) & Asus Blitz Formula SE (DDR2)

Most photos below are for Asus Blitz Formula Special Edition seeing as both are so similar. Looks like the separated mosfet heatsink on the left outer edge of the motherboard has a better spring hook mounting mechanism compared to the push pin approach on the Asus P5K Deluxe series keeping it flat and in contact with the surface they're trying to cool.

Re: Asus R.O.G. Blitz Formula (DDR2) / Blitz Extreme (DDR3) - 2 phase DDR2/DDR3 previ

Haven't done any tests yet but searching the internet I found some results regarding how effective the Fusion Block System might be at http://www.awardfabrik.de/index.php?...id=154&seite=1

The water cooling is consisting a simple Customsystem, of a dual radiator, which is platziert on the housing bottom with two 120mm exhausts, a Eheimpumpe with AGB, 10/eight hose (reducers for thicker hose lie in addition, with) and the NexXxos XP-CCU-radiator. The temperature of the water was measured with one in the cooling circuit integrated sensor, the temperatures of the individual components (MT, NB and SELF-SERVICE) with ASUS SAMPLE, CCU with core temp 0,95 after 1 h Prime (25,2, attitude Custom) was selected.

vCore: 1.40 V (BIOS)
FSB Termination: 1.30 V (BIOS)
Northbridge vCore: 1.52 V (BIOS)
vDimm: 1.72 V (BIOS)

The vCore nevertheless relatively strong was remarkable vDroop with increased. With 1.40 V stopped in the BIOS, both ASUS SAMPLE and CPU-Z indicated only 1.33 V. Unfortunately no further increase of the FSB was more possible on these cooling conditions.

If the Northbridge became warm already nearly 70°C with purely passive enterprise, the small exhaust brought an improvement of approximately 15°C. After we had integrated the Main board in the water circulation, there was over 20°C temperature improvement. The water temperature rose on only around 1°C (the ambient temperature was almost constant when all measurements). The Motherboard and Southbridgetemperatur were lowered over for instance 5°. The integrated water cooling thus quite makes sense. A clear decrease of the Main board temperatures is to have to take possible without a rise of the temperatures clear for it in the cooling circuit in purchase.
@6x550FSB
NB passive cooled = 68C
NB air cooled = 54C
NB water cooled = 46C

Re: Asus R.O.G. Blitz Formula (DDR2) / Blitz Extreme (DDR3) - 2 phase DDR2/DDR3 previ

Asus Blitz Formula 1205 vs 1402 bios

Just flashed my Asus Blitz Formula from 1205 to 1402 official bios http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...ula/BF1402.zip with E8500 already installed. Using in bios EzFlash and USB drive the flash was successful with no problems

Noticed to changes in bios from 1205 to 1402 bios.
  1. 400FSB Strap added to 1402 must be for QX9770
  2. CPU ratio no longer has AUTO and Manual selection - it's just one setting which you can select ratios for AUTO to 9.5x in N/2 increments while I have my E8500 installed. AFAIK, N/2 cpu multiplier support was added in 1302 bios and higher
  3. The memory timings section now shows what the auto values are set as horizontally across the screen - must of flowed on down from what I saw in Maximus board bioses
  4. Transaction Booster levels increased. 1205 bios enabled showed only level 0-1, while 1402 bios shows level selections between 0-3
  5. Command rate shows 1N/2N instead of 1T/2T now

Here's where the cpu vcore voltage jumps up somewhat, 1.55v bios set for Super Pi dual 32M capable and 1.625v bios set for at least 8 minutes of Prime95 small ffts load testing. Room temp rose from 20C to 25C for these tests compared to last nights tests.

E6750 G0 ES - max FSB tests
Asus Blitz Formula

Did some quick max FSB tests and basically for this E6750 ES G0 it's same as on Asus P5K Deluxe 0311 bios around 490FSB and 495FSB with some CPU PLL voltage + NB voltage tweaks to boot from bios into windows. I believe this particular E6750 is hitting an FSB wall as 500FSB seems out of reach for straight boot from bios into windows.

The extra CPU PLL voltage above 1.80v helps on Blitz Formula compared with P5K Deluxe. On P5K Deluxe max boot from bios into windows was 8x493FSB with 1.8v CPU PLL Volts. On Blitz Formula CPU PLL Volt set at 1.84v allowed 495FSB to boot from bios into windows so far. But haven't done any extensive testing of voltages to see if I can squeeze any more FSB out of this E6750 ES G0 cpu.

setFSB in windows from 493FSB to 495FSB

E6750 G0 ES - 4:5 divider
Asus Blitz Formula

Jumped straight to 4:5 divider and 8x490FSB and shoved some serious voltage into the system to pull this of

612mhz 4-4-4-9 was with exactly what is reported by Asus PC Probe2 = 2.72v vdimm. Surprisingly the Blitz Formula reports pretty accurate vdimm voltages from bios to PC Probe2. The only voltage with variance is vFSB volts... i.e. 1.28v vFSB bios set = 1.30-1.31v PC Probe2.
