What program do you use to partition the drive in a specific location? Partition Magic?

You can use PM-8 but I usually set it up when I format the disk using windoz XP / computer management / disk management

You don't really need to seperate it onto another partition. It doesn't make a difference as your seek speeds will have an extra 2 or 3 IOs to process (seperate partition information, etc).

Best thing is to either have a dedicated scratch disk (a simple 9.1GB SCSI 15k disk) or the fastest-small drive you can afford. If not, and you use ghost a lot, you can create a seperate partition as described above, or you can tell ghost to ignore the pagefile (as windows re-creates a missing one on startup).

If you go the way of non-partitioning, I recommend you download a program (30day Shareware available) called O&O Defrag Professional (or Server if you're using Win2k3), and set the thing to do a Complete/Name Boot-Time defragmentation. It arranges it so that after your directories and rec. MFT tables, it throws the pagefile, and then the rest of your data. You can't move the main MFT as that's determined by the NTFS algorithm.

Anyway, this ensures that your pagefile is practically the first file on your HDD, and the reading heads get better speed here (remember, HDDs aren't CAV-based, and you cover a larger area on the outside of the disk at xx RPMs than at the inner radius.)
