QX9650 - safe temperatures?
I have the CPU running nicely in my trusty Commando at 3.6Ghz (400FSB)
It's been running great for a few hours now but I'm not sure what the safe temperatures are. With no load it is sitting at 50c but under 100% load when it's crunching chess positions it reaches 78c.
Is this safe, are the readings unreliable.
I have Core Temp 0.99.3 running on Vista 64.
Any advice welcomed.

I have used this as a reference for years;
"Core 2 Extreme QX9650
(quad 3.0GHz - 2x6MB) (0.85V~1.3625V) 1.45V 125A 130W 64.5° C"
I would be cross-referencing those load temps with Real Temp, EVEREST and OCCT along with your idle temps in BIOS. May have to seriously look at your cooling set-up.
If they all come with similar values you could back of the OC or lap the CPU (can give 5-10C improved thermal conductivity/dissipation):
If you read this the real desired outcomes for lapping are to remove the tin layer, thus exposing the copper surface, and reducing the "thickness" of the IHS, it aint about making the thing shiny so you can show the girls.
