Advice on current crop of cards
Old 26-08-2008, 11:38 AM   #1 (permalink)

Just want a bit of advice on the current crop of cards.

Job permitting I'm about to build a rig for my friend/colleague. We are looking at the 4870x2 and 280s. Plan to put the GPU and CPU under water.

I'm also interested in whether it's worth an upgrade from my 9800GX2 to either of these. Looking at hwbot results it's a bit of a mixed bag. 9800gx2 still seems to rule 3dmark 06, whereas 03 the 4870x2 seem to be taking over.

Also how about crossfire or sli with these cards. Worth it?

Cheers for any pointers

RLM

Seems wise George. We're expecting the Nehalem around Xmas time I guess? 8 cores would come in damn handy. Will have to get saving. Ouch.

Well the answer to the will power, I think is going to be 'No'.

Have ordered two 4870x2 waterblocks from Eddy, and I'm picking up one card on wednesday, and another to follow.

I gather there is a vmod for the board with a 50Ohm VR. Does anyone have the full info on this?

Cheers

I did see that before posting the question here. Just wondered if anyone had actually done the mod and had photos. I need to read through that thread again, but the info looks untested.
