Intel back on top for dedicated servers too? Just wondering how their dedicated servers are doing these days (I guess overclocking them is out of the question ).I am currently using a Barton 3000 with 1GB of ram. The server is used for php/mysql sites, mainly vB. The current server is chugging along fine but I have off-loaded all attachments to a different script on a third party server but that's less than ideal so am thinking of upgrading servers. Here are a few choices - want to spend as little as possible really.. around the $200 or less mark. What do you think? Processor RAM Hard Drive Price INTEL 1 Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz 1GB 160GB SATA II $124.95/mo. INTEL 2 Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz 1GB 160GB SATA II $139.95/mo INTEL 3 Dual Xeon 3.0GHz HT 1GB 2 x 160GB SATA II $199.95/mo INTEL 4 Dual Processor Dual Core Xeon 5130 2.0GHz (Woodcrest) 2GB 250GB SATA II $239.95/mo INTEL 5 Dual Processor Quad Core Xeon 5310 1.6GHz (Clovertown) 2GB 250GB SATA II $279.95/mo INTEL 6 Dual Processor Dual Core Xeon 5160 3.0GHz (Woodcrest) 2GB 250GB SATA II $329.95/mo AMD 1 Athlon 3800 1GB 160GB SATA II $99.95/mo. AMD 2 Dual Core Athlon 3800 1GB 160GB SATA II $119.95/mo. AMD 3 Dual Opteron 246 1GB 160GB SATA II $184.95/mo AMD 4 Single Processor Dual Core Opteron 275 1GB 160GB SATA II $199.95/mo. AMD 5 Dual Processor Dual Core Opteron 2214 2.2Ghz 2GB 250GB SATA II $249.95/mo. AMD 6 Dual Processor Dual Core Opteron 2218 2.6Ghz 2GB 250GB SATA II $329.95/mo. |

Is this a good one? Intel Dual Xeon 2.4GHz HT RAM: 2GB Hard Drive: 2 x 80GB SATA Monthly Fee: $134.95 It has 2GB ram and 2 HDs (could use one as a back up) What do you think? What's the Intel Dual Xeon 2.4GHz like? Cheers! PS where's Eva2000 when you need him lol |

without knowing much about your traffic etc... i'd pick the best performance to price ratio one which coincidently is the best server on the list = INTEL 6 Dual Processor Dual Core Xeon 5160 3.0GHz (Woodcrest) 2GB 250GB SATA II $329.95/mo |

Thanks George ![]() Is the last one I posted any good?
I currently use a Barton 3000 with 1GB of ram and one single 80GB hard disk. Would the Intel one be quite a bit better? |

brook, Knowing how high io operations are on alot of these web and sql servers (combining them can often be suicide). I'd be going with a smp system for sure, i'd also be wanting 2 disk so i could put them in a raid0 configuration (im assuming you have regular scheduled backups) Sql means high memory usage, so youd be wanting to go with 2gb of ram minimum, I'd be pushing towards 4gb, but of course you have to buy for your situation. |
