Hi spoolindsm127 and welcome
As GenAn stated i7 980X loosens the uncore to mem frequency ratio from 2x to 1.5x so you can potentially push memory a bit more before you hit a uncore frequency ceiling see this thread http://i4memory.com/f55/intel-core-i...-ratios-23430/
My name is Ali and I am new to the forums. This is my first post so I apologize if I break any rules.
I just wanted to say to eva2000 that those overclocks really are astonishing, very well done! I'm not nearly as knowledgable as some people on this forum but I know that 7-7-7-21 at nearly 2200MHz is downright amazing. I'm new to the i7 world but still this seems to me like a great achievement, congrats!
I have recently acquired a i7 920 and am very excited to be moving to the x58 platform. I have been doing a lot of research and luckily found a very good OCing batch i7 off ebay. Now my concern is with memory and honestly can use some help.
I am interested in buying memory that is capable of running 2000+Mhz at very low tmings. I have narrowed it down to either the Corsair Dominator GT 2000MHz ( Either CL8 or CL7 ), Kingston HyperX T1 2000MHz ( CL8 ), or Mushkin Redline 998750 2000MHz 8-8-7-24. Anyone have any personal experience that they can share?
Once again if I am taking this thread off topic I apolgize but I figured this would be a good way to introduce myself. Regardless of my questions I know I will find an answer. I honestly though did want to congratulate eva2000 for his success with the Kingston memory
Hi thanks for the quick and informative response.
Yes VDIMM was another one of my concerns. I would think it would be better to buy a kit that uses less VDIMM for 2000+/-MHz. From what I can see it seems as if Kingston HyperX T1 needs the most.
Also another thing I forgot to mention was the ICs. According to a lot of reviews I have seen the Elpida Hypers are having a lot of problems. I have looked at reviews of the three above mentioned kits and the kit with the least negative reviews ( pertaining to failing Hyper chips ) was the Kingston HyperX T1. Could this be possible due to the lack of people buying Kingston memory, therefore lessening the chances of reported failures? Or are any of the three better than the other?
I have a decent understanding of this stuff so if the internals are mainly the same then overall there should not be much of a difference between the kits. However any opinions are always welcome and much appreciated. Thanks.
There's 2x Kingston 2000mhz 8-8-8-24 elpida SKUs, the older original KHX16000D3ULT1K3/6GX which unfortunately were majority from the bad batches of Elpida 50nm MNH-E Hypers ICs and the newer SKU - KHX2000C8D3T1K3/6GX with better improved reliability Elpida 50nm MGH-E Hyper ICs, both do tight 2000mhz timings, the MGH-E seems more likely to do 7-7-7-x compared to MNH-E which do 7-8-7-x. It's probably the older bad SKU giving a bad rep for Kingston 2000C8. But it's too early to tell if the newer SKU is better or not, but seen less folks reports issues with them so far.
But as stated in this thread both SKUs are end of line discontinued now replaced with Kingston 2000mhz cas9 part - KHX2000C9AD3T1K3/6GX which apparently users less performing non-50nm Elpida BDBG ICs see 6GB Kingston HyperX KHX2000C9AD3T1K3/6GX Elpida BDBG Testing
And I believe Mushkin's newer kits don't use Elpida Hypers, so you won't get as tight timings on that kit.
That leaves with with Corsair Dominator GT 2000C7 7-8-7-20 SKU as the other option for 100% Elpida Hypers, although there's also Patriot 2000mhz CAS8 and Super Talent 2000/2200 CAS8 kits which use Elpida Hypers. Patriot uses very old Elpida MNH-E hypers so could be risky as the weeks reported in GenAn's thread below so week 10-11, 2009 = 910 or 911 which is within range of the bad batch period (no confirmation from any manufacturer as to which weeks batches were bad unfortunately).
Not sure what Super Talent 2000/2200 CAS8 Elpida Hyper ics used - I have a few kits I'll test later but not prying off heatsinks heh. 6GB Patriot Viper II PV236G2000LLKB Elpida MNH-E Hyper http://i4memory.com/f83/super-talent...2000-c8-23675/
